Don’t
duplicate your travel insurance cover
Because travel insurance is a lot of different types of
insurance rolled into one, you may find that you already
have insurance for some of the things it aims to cover.
If you have top-of-the-range private medical insurance for
example, you may already be paying for cover for emergency
medical expenses anywhere in the world. It may be possible
to extend the ‘personal liability’ section of
a contents policy to cover you against the cost of being
sued for damages while abroad. If you have an ‘all-risks’
extension to your contents insurance, this can cover both
baggage and belongings – including cash – that
you take out of the home, however far you choose to take
them (although there may be a limit on the number of days
you can take them abroad). If you are travelling in the
UK, making sure that your belongings and cash are covered
by an all-risks extension to your contents policy may be
all the ‘travel’ insurance you need –
unless you want cover against the costs of cancelling your
holiday. Nearly all travel policies do not include travel
in the UK, although a handful do.
