A recent survey on travel has revealed
that many Britons plan to go abroad this year without taking
out any travel insurance. The poll found that a quarter
of British people will not be getting insurance before they
go abroad this year.
This is quite a worrying figure, as travel
insurance
is a must-have no matter where you go or how long for. Plus,
recent unrest in some countries and a shaky economic situation
in others mean that having good travel insurance cover is
more important than ever before. One of the things that
holiday insurance covers you for is unanticipated incidents
or emergencies that lead to your holiday being delayed,
cancelled or ending early.
The same survey also found that 33% thought travel insurance
isn’t really necessary. While it’s safe to say
that the majority of people who take out travel insurance
will never need to use it, it’s still definitely worth
having it as you can never be completely sure you won’t
need it. After all, who could have predicted how much trouble
the Icelandic volcano would cause when it erupted recently?
Without travel insurance to cover extra accommodation costs,
many people would have been left with big hotel bills.
22% of people also told the survey that they think the
cost of travel insurance is too high. However, even if buying
an insurance policy seems like a lot, it’s still a
fraction of the cost you’d have to pay if something
went wrong on holiday and you ended up having to pay a week’s
worth of hospital bills out of your own pocket, for example.
While it is worrying that a significant number of British
people are sceptical about holiday
insurance and that many of them won’t buy it at
all, it is still heartening to see that the majority of
people take it out before they travel abroad. This suggests
that most people are aware of the benefits of having travel
insurance – and the dangers of not having it at all.
After all, even if you never need to use your insurance,
it is still comforting to know that it’s there just
in case. Plus, if anything did go wrong it seems safe to
suspect that people would be very glad that they had it
just in case. Travel insurance might not be the most exciting
aspect of your holiday, but it is an essential one, so if
you’re due to go on a trip soon, please make sure
you get the right cover. |
